Stroll Garden growing in Kansas
A country garden in Olathe KS is being created on a totally blank state. Unlike a lot of the land in the area, this 6-acre plot was quite empty -- no wooded areas, no recent farming. Just weeds and weedy grasses.
So in this case every inch of the property is designed from scratch.
The “bones” will be a ‘designed woodland’, filled with shade trees (primarily Maples & Pines) , understory trees (primarily Redbuds and Dogwoods) and for space-shaping and creating a human scale hundreds of 4-season flowering shrubs – Witch Hazel, Shrub Dogwoods, Fothergillas, Hydrangeas (Oak Leaf, Paniculata, Macrophylla), Viburnums (American Cranberrybush, Double File), Lilacs, Magnolias, Kerrias...a long, long list for the plant-loving resident.
There are several huge borders, some mixed, including both shrubs and perennials; some color-specific;and one glorious 100’ x 20’ perennial border.
Decomposed granite paths, mown grass paths, and generous stepping-stone paths will lead from one garden ‘room’ to the next, controlling the pace of movement.
A fascinating project coming to fruition over the next few years.
